Technology: Americans Continue To Embrace Use of Broadband Internet Connections
A new survey has found that every second American adult has a high-speed Internet connection. At 47% of adult Americans now have broadband band connections at home.
In 2005 30% of adult Americans reported having broadband Internet connections. The largest growth came from African American households who saw broadband rates of use increase by 8% since 2006.
Among those individuals surveyed, of those who use the internet at home, 70% have a high-speed connection while 23% use dialup.
A little slower to adapt are senior citizens who can claim only 15% using high-speed connections amongst Internet users at home.
John B. Horrigan, Associate Director of Research at the Pew Internet & American Life project says, “The moderate growth in home high-speed adoption from 2006 to 2007 is partly a reflection of strong prior-year growth; the low-hanging fruit was picked in 2005. Luring remaining hard-to-get adults to home broadband is likely to involve showing them the relevance of online content.” Horrigan is also the author of the report.
This report is based on a February-March survey of 2,200 adults, 996 of whom were home broadband users.
